Week 1, Day 4 – Traveling Light, Photocell, and Digit Displays

Day 4 schedule:

  • Lessons 24 to 28
    • Lesson 24: Eight LED with 74HC595. Project lit one light at a time. Challenge: make light travel (one led at a time) in one direction, then make light travel back and forth.
    • Lesson 25 The Serial Monitor.
    • Lesson 26 Photocell: the more lights, the more LEDs light up in project. Challenge: change code so that the less light on the photocell, the more LED lights are lit.
    • Lesson 27 74HC595 And Segment Display. Challenge: change counting up to counting down.
    • Lesson 28 Four Digital Seven Segment Display: project showed the same value over the 4 digits. Challenge: show a different number on each digit.
  • English:
    • Kahoots.

Observations: challenges took longer this time. The participants enjoyed creating 8 bit values with the binary 1s in the locations where the LEDs are to be on. The last challenge took the longest, the students needed to program the 4 digits one at a time, fast enough so that it looks seamless to the naked eye.

Single Digit Down Counter

On the English part, the participants enjoyed kahoots, it became their favorite game.
